Gaffney H.S. Boys Soccer Team enters it's 5 season this year with hopes of improving on it's best season record of the year 2000 . The program has seen tuff times over the past 4 years, not winning a game until it's 3rd year of play and then slipping back last year to 1 win for the season. With a group of seasoned players returning for the 2002 year, a promising season should unfold.

The first 2 years of GHS soccer were a hard lesson in top notch soccer in the Upstate of South Carolina. Playing the likes of Dorman, Spartanburg, Northwestern, Rock Hill, and others in the Region, and also facing Ft Mill, Clover, Hillcrest, and York proved to be painful at times, but a way to measure where the program was at and where it needed to get too.

In the 2000 season, GHS had it's best year ever with a 6:17 record that earned new Head Coach Rudi Heim Coach of the Year in Region-2 4/A. GHS now in it's 3rd season with it's 3rd head coach was well on it's way. With upsets of Northwestern and Rock Hill High Schools, a new found respect from region coaches and teams was earned. The team featured 2 time All-Region player Robert Heim and Football standout Bradshaw Littlejohn as well as stellar sweeper David Emrich. Transfer student Robert Heim brought a hard nose and fast pace approach to the game back up with speed, skill, and goal scoring abilities. Robert Heim had played soccer in Florida for his dad Coach Heim where the tandem won 2 Florida State High School Championships and also played club ball where his teams won several tournaments and were nationally rank. Bradshaw Littlejohn who was one of South Carolina's best High School football players became a stellar Keeper for GHS and David Emrich held the team together in back. This combination proved to help GHS get it's first win ever and gain respect in the region.

After a turnaround in 2000, a drop off was in the cards for the 2001 season. With the graduation of Robert Heim, Bradshaw Littlejohn, and David Emrich, and the transfer of Billy Ludkovsky, GHS turned to it's junior players for leadership and experience. With Mike Melton, Nick "Ese" Aguiler, and Scott Simmons having to fill the shoes of the pervious class that pulled GHS out of the cellar and into a respectful team, the weight was to much to handle. The 2001 season provide only 1 win but it was a timely one that gave them a 2nd place finish in the Greer HS Soccer Tournament. What could have been a total disaster gave GHS their first ever trophy while only providing 1 win. This young team lost a few close games and will build on the knowledge and experience the players gained. GHS started no senior and 4 juniors in the 2001 season, what was lack of experience last year should blossom into a well rounded team in 2002.

As the 5th season of GHS soccer approaches, with high hopes of a better season, with new records to be broken, and respect regained. Gaffney will welcome back a spot light player as new Asst. Coach Robert Heim. Rob should help push the team to a higher plain and provide leadership from the bench as a coach. With senior players wanting to prove they can play at a higher level, it should make for an interesting season.

Come out and support our team this year, with more fans in the stands this year, it will make for a successful year!
